For years, the Nursing department at Sampson Community College has resided directly above the Cosmetology department in SCC’s Technology Building. This week, however, the two are coming together for reasons that will benefit students in each dept.
“Today senior nursing students are having their graduation pictures with their nursing caps done,” says Krystle Edge, SCC nursing instructor. “The photos will go on our wall of graduates in the nursing area for everyone to see. We enlisted the help of our cosmetology department, so we can work together as a group to benefit all the students. For us, our students can get top notch hair and makeup done at no cost and for cosmetology students, it gives them more real-world experience.”

Not only will the photos be used for recognition in the hall, but they are also used for the state board licenses as well. “They came to ask us about collaborating,” says Loreta Jones, SCC’s Cosmetology Department Chair. “We are right downstairs and immediately thought it was a great idea! The students were happy to do it. Doing the work for photography can require more work which is great because that means more experience.”
The Cosmetology program provides hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. Classes provide a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills. It includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge and other selected topics.
Recently, the Cosmetology program also added Natural Hair Care and Manicurist courses. For more information about our Cosmetology program, contact Jones at ljones@sampsoncc.edu or 910.900.4069. For more information about our Nursing program, contact Edge at kedge@sampsoncc.edu or 910.900.4057.
